Thyroid

What is a Thyroid?

The thyroid is an essential gland which impacts our most important organs, including the brain, heart, kidneys, and liver; it impacts every cell in our body!

Thyroid issues and treatment

Patients who feel a neck lump or a thyroid lump should contact a head and neck surgeon for the necessary diagnostic procedures.

If the biopsy is worrisome for cancer or if the lump is large and causing choking or difficulty breathing, thyroid surgery may be required. If the mass is small and the biopsy is benign, tests can be performed at a later time, to determine if the mass is enlarging. If the lump is in fact enlarging, thyroid removal surgery can be performed at that later time.

The thyroid surgery procedure involves the removal of at least one thyroid lobe. Thyroid tumor surgery, for thyroid cancers, requires removal of both thyroid lobes and the associated lymph nodes.

Dr. Shemen, a thyroid surgeon in NYC, has also performed well over 7,000 thyroid surgeries and has incorporated several new technologies into his surgery including nerve monitoring, powered instrumentation, and advanced hemostasis.

If you have questions about your diagnosis or planned treatment, please visit Dr. Shemen for a second opinion.
