Parathyroid

Patients with kidney stones or bone fractures may have underlying parathyroid problems. Patients with raised calcium levels, caused by over- functioning parathyroid glands, are usually referred to as a parathyroid doctor for surgery. The conditions which are encountered during parathyroid procedures are usually benign, such as a parathyroid adenoma.

A variety of imaging studies are performed prior to surgery. In this practice, we use CT and ultrasound, and occasionally Sestamibi, to identify the parathyroid which is responsible for the elevated calcium level. PTH levels tested during the surgery may also assist in ensuring successful surgery.

Dr. Shemen, a parathyroid surgeon, has performed over 700 parathyroid surgeries using minimally invasive (mini) parathyroid surgery approaches.
